Written by her grandson, the late Homer L. Beeman: I remember my grandmother, HARRIETT CATHERINE BITTINGER, as being a "Big Boned Person with high cheek bones, and kind of a little mustache.  She was fond of lighting up her corncob pipe after a good meal. I understand from my Uncle HOWARD WILSON BROADWATER, her son, that she had continued the habit of her mother, REBBECA SUSAN (BROADWATER) BITTINGER, who he said also enjoyed smoking a corncob pipe. Like mother, Like daughter, they used to say. Grandma was a kind person, but to us children, she seemed to be a little on the fiesty side. I sometimes think she was the authority in the house. Of course with 16 ranting,  raving children always under foot, who wouldn't be a little testy at times? I remember that grandma had suger real bad, and wouldn't take her medicine. Later on in life, when she was in her 60's, she developed gangrene in one of her legs, and had to have her leg removed just below the knee. The wound never did completely heal, and like my grandfather, HENRY THOMAS BEEMAN, it finally took her life. She was 72 years old when she passed away, Aug. 21, 1958. I will always remember her as a strong, caring person, who put her family above herself. She didn't always have the best, or the greatest comforts in life, but she made do with what God supplied. She was faithful to her husband and her family of 16, and now each one of them, with her husband, and her desendents, rise up and call her blessed. "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vane, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands; let her own works praise her in the gates. (Proverbs 31:28-31) PRECIOUS MEMORIES HOW THEY LINGER.
