HERBERT L. BROADWATER — CHESTER — Herbert Lee Broadwater of Chester died at University Hospital in Baltimore on Thursday, October 20, 1999. He was 73.

Born on October 2, 1926 in Barton, MD, he was the son of the late Harman and Harriet Catherine Bittinger Broadwater. In addition to his parents, Mr. Broadwater is predeceased by five sisters: Minnie Broadwater, Dorothy Sutherland, Flossie Beeman, Nellie Llewellyn, and Edith Long.

He attended school in Barton and enlisted in the U.S.Navy on June 26, 1944. His tours of duty included the Naval Recruiting Station in Baltimore; the Naval Telecommunications Center in Bainbridge; the Commander Service Force 7th Fleet; Motor Torpedo Boat 20; and the USS Orestes. He received the Pacific Theater (1 star), American Theater and Phillipine Liberation (1 star) ribbons and the Victory Medal. Mr. Broadwater was honorably discharged on February 18, 1946. He married Doris Frances Dawson on September 29, 1946. They moved to Baltimore where Mr. Broadwater finished his education under the GI Bill. He began working for Barry's Auto Garage in Baltimore and then moved to Glen Burnie in 1950. He worked for Ewell Motors in Glen Burnie until 1955. Mr. Broadwater then operated Herb's One Stop until 1957. After being self-employed for 18 months in Severn, he closed the shop and began working for Subway Garage in Odenton in 1958. After twenty years, Mr. Broadwater purchased the business in 1978 as the sole owner/operator. He retired in 1991 due to health problems. Mr. Broadwater and his wife moved to Chester in 1992. Mr. Broadwater was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, American Legion #276 and V.F.W. #160. He was also a scout leader for 15 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Broadwater is survived by two sons: Wayne Randall Broadwater of Hernden, VA and Stephen Lee Broadwater of Severna Park; two daughters: Helen Leslie Lotter of Hollywood, FL and Marcelene Sue Patton of Ohio; four brothers: Howard Broadwater and Grover Broadwater, both of Lavale, Edward Broadwater of Corriganville, and Robert Broadwater of Lonaconing; six sisters: Della Beeman of Carlie, PA, Theresa Broadwater of Barton, Myrtle Broadwater of York, PA, Rosella Yoder of Springs, PA Lillie Broadwater of Westernport, and Thelma Ikes of Summerset, PA; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 1999 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester. Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester.

Burial will be in Stevensville cemetery.
