Susan was the daughter of Charles Christopher Snowden & Minerva Frances Portwood Snowden. She married Daniel Phelps Chaney, the son of William & Nancy Keene Chaney, on February 14, 1883 in Madison County, Kentucky. The couple were the parents of Ottie Mae, Ida M., Robert J. and Park H. Chaney.

During her lifetime, she lived in the Kentucky counties of Madison, Estill and Jefferson. In her latter years, she accepted an invitation to live in the home of her daughter, Ida Alcorn Chaney. When Mrs. Chaney passed away, her remains were sent to Estill County for interment beside those of her late husband.
