Charles was the son of Joshua and Mary Ann Dawson Snowden. His paternal and maternal grandfathers, David Snowden and Christopher Dawson, were Revolutionary War soldiers.

He was a native of Clark County and grew to adulthood there. He married Minerva Portwood on September 28, 1850 in Madison County. They settled near the Bybee Pottery Works and raised a large family. Snowden Lane is named for him.

Mr. Snowden worked as a farmer and carpenter. Although the family was large and the work hours long, he and Mrs. Snowden managed to make each of their children feel special and loved.
