James Edward Valentine was born Marchh 9, 1829, in Creagerstown District, Frederick County, Maryland, the only child of William and Mary Magdalena Mehring Valentine. His mother died two weeks after he was born. His father then married Lydia Mehring, his mother's sister. James married on March 29, 1853, in Frederick County, to Ella Josephine Rodeniser, daughter of John and Frances Martin Rodeniser. They were the parents of 6 children: John William, Mary Frances, Charles Edward, James Harvey, Calvin Horkey and Ella Ethel Valentine. James passed away on August 15, 1881, in Rocky Ridge, Frederick County, and was buried there in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

The 1st and final account of Josephine Valentine, executrix of the last will and testament of James E. Valentine, late of Frederick County, deceased. Estate inventory valued at $1,814.00, less debts in the amount of $578.06 and 5% commission of $90.70 allowed by the Orphans' Court to the accountant, leaving a balance for distribution of $1,145.24. Distribution as follows:
--To Josephine Valentine, widow of testator for her life the whole balance of $1,145.24.
