Calvin Horkey Valentine was born March 6, 1869, in Creagerstown District, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of James Edward and Ella Josephine Rodeniser Valentine. On May 6, 1891, in Keysville, Carroll County, Maryland, he married Mary Susan Shorb, daughter of Edward and Ellen Martin Shorb. They were the parents of 2 children: Lenny Ray and Ellen Josephine Valentine. Calvin passed away on April 1, 1935, in Keysville, and was buried on the 4th in Keysville Union Cemetery.

"Calvin H. Valentine, 22, of Rocky Ridge, bachelor, to Mary S. Shorb, 24, of Keysville, Carroll County, maid. Married May 6, 1891, at the bride's home, by Rev. J. U. Asper."

"C. H. VALENTINE DIES. Well-Known Churchman Directed Choirs And Bands. Calvin H. Valentine, well-known churchman and retired farmer, died Monday morning at 9 o'clock at his home near Keysville. He had been in declining health for some time but had been able to be about until about three weeks ago when his illness became serious. Death was due to chronic myocarditis. He was aged 66 years. Mr. Valentine was a son of the late James and Josephine Valentine. He was married to Miss Mary S. Shorb, who survives with two children, Lenny R. Valentine and Mrs. E. Gregg Kiser, both of near Keysville, and three grandchildren, Misses Ethel Valentine, York, Pa.; Hazel Valentine, Emmitsburg, and Pauline Kiser, near Keysville. Mr. Valentine was a member of the Lutheran church since he was seventeen years old, and was interested in the work of the church and also in music. He directed church choirs for the past forty-eight years, and at the time of his death was leader of the Keysville church choir. He was also interested in bands and for anumber of years served as leader of the Taneytown and Detour bands. He was a member of the church council a number of times and served as a member of the building committee when the new Lutheran Church was erected at Keysville a few years ago. He also led the music in the Sunday School for a number of years and had a perfect attendance record in the Sunday School for five years. The funeral will be held Thursday, meeting at the home at 10 a.m. Further services will be conducted in the Keysville Lutheran Church. Rev. P. H. Williams will officiate, assisted by Rev. W. O. Ibach, a former pastor of the church, and Rev. Guy P. Bready, pastor of the Reformed Church at Keysville. Interment will be made in the Keysville Cemetery. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. They will be William Stonesifer, James Kiser, Charles Devilbiss, Maurice Wilhide, Roy Kiser and Harvey Frock."
