Virgie Mae Simmons, 89, a resident of Pendleton Nursing Home, Franklin, since 1998, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Mrs. Simmons was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Zigler and was the daughter of the late Isaac Perry Hartman and Lucy Vandevander Hartman. She was a homemaker and a member of Smith Creek Church of the Brethren. Her husband, Joseph A. Simmons, preceded her in death March 25, 1986.

She is survived by five daughters, Guilda Meadows of Vermillion, Ohio, Velma Lantz, Judy Simmons, Lacy N. Simmons, George I. Simmons and Perry W. Simmons, all of Franklin; 28 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Alexander; four brothers, Tom Hartman, Harry Hartman, Arthur Hartman and Charlie Hartman; nine sisters, Rettie Pennington, Bessie Lambert, Fannie Bodkin, Gertrude Lambert, Martha Simmons, Mary Johnston, Dora Murphy, Nettie Moyers and Buanna Judy; two grandchildren, Norman Sisson and Bobby Jack Mitchell; and one great-grandchild, Alicia VanMeter.

Pastor Dan Ludwick and Forrest Rodgers conducted the funeral Saturday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Simmons Family Cemetery, Smith Creek.
