She was born June 11, 1914, the 10th child of the late Isaac Perry Hartman and Lucy Vandevander Hartman of Smith Creek. On January 8, 1939, she married Woodrow Johnston of Circleville.
She was a lifelong resident of Franklin and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She spent the first 25 years of her married life devoting her time to being a wife, mother and homemaker. In 1965, she started working for Franklin Garment Company where she continued for 13 years until retiring in 1978. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, crocheting and gardening.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Boyd, a grandson, David Dewey, and three sisters, Retta Pennington, Gertrude Lambert and Martha Simmons, and two brothers, Arthur and Charlie Hartman.
Survivors include her husband, Woodrow Johnston, Franklin; four daughters, Bethea Edmonds, Richfield, Utah, Nina Dewey, Missoula, Montana, Stephanie Ashcraft, Idamay; Cathy Armentrout, Franklin; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are six sisters, Buanna Judy, Nettie Moyers, Dora Murphy, Vergie Simmons, Fannie Bodkin, Bessie Lambert, and two brother, Tom and Harry Hartman.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Franklin. Interment followed at the Smith Creek Johnston graveyard by Kimble Funeral Home.
