Alice Maud Call Burton, 91, longtime resident and pioneer of Star Valley, died Tuesday, Jan 16, 1973 of causes incident to age at the family residence, 268 2nd St., Ogden, Utah. She resided in Afton for about 75 years, moving to Ogden 12 years ago.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Meyer Mortuary, 845 Washington Ave., Ogden, and services will also be conducted in the Afton First ward Chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. with a viewing preceding the services. Burial will be in the Afton Cemetery.
Mrs Burton was born July 12, 1881 at Bountiful, Utah, a daughter of Anson Vasco and Alive Jeannette Farnham Call.
She spent her early childhood in Bountiful, where she learned early in life to help her mother, who was a dressmaker and milliner during the time her father was serving an LDS mission in England. Upon his return, they moved to Star Valley, locating in Afton in 1887. There where very few settlers in the valley. They lived in a one-room log cabin. Alice Maud attended the public school, which was ungraded, at Afton with one teacher and all classes in one room. Her father was the teacher for many of her school years.
She was married to Thomas fielding Burton June 22, 1989 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died April 6, 1963 at Ogden, Utah.
They made their home in Afton, where they raised a family of 13 children. She lived here all her life until about 12 years ago, when she moved to Ogden.
She was an active LDS church member, serving in many positions throughout her life, including secretary and first counselor in her ward Primary; Sunday School teacher for 10 years; teacher and president of ward YWMIA six years; second counselor in stake YWMIA 12 years, during which she directed many fund raising entertainments, dramatized scenes from the Book of Mormon, wrote historical pageants, was the originator of social activities for YWMIA girls, later known as Beehive Girls and organized Beehive Girls in every ward in the stake; sewing director in Relief Society 24 years, visiting teacher 18 years; captain of Camp Afton, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, six years. She was active as a Relief Society visiting teacher in Ogden at the age of 90.
She served as Red Cross chapter vice president for two years.
Her family has paid tribute to her as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother who lived a full life of service and was loved by everyone who knew her. She possessed the ability to make people "feel at home" she assisted countless people in times of trial and need and was much sought after as a dressmaker. She assisted in preparing the dead for burial for many years, made burial clothes and made temple clothing for many church members in the valley.
She loved good books and good entertainment, and was especially fond of the Book of Mormon. She wrote and directed many plays, was a fine actress and played many leading dramatic parts. She also made many costumes for plays. she had an artistic ability to make useful articles for the home, was a talented painter in both oil and water, and shared her talents with many.
She had a marvelous ability"to do with what she had."
She is survived by the following sons, Fielding C., Afton, Wyo.; Dr McKay C., New Orleans, La.; Arnold b. Fluckiger, Menlo Park Calif.; daughters, Alberta, Mrs Sarah Alice B. Steinicke; Mrs. Charles W. (Ellen) Price, Mrs Clyde H. (Rachel) Bramwell and Mrs Louise B. Crossley all of Ogden, Utah; Mrs Rodney (Lila) Barrus, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Mrs Raymond (Carol) Humpherys, Thayne, Wyo.; Mrs Keith P. (Mona) Brown, Plainfield, Ill.; 47 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers.Anson Vasco Call II, Citrus Heights, Calif.; Farnham L. Call, Afton, Wyo.; and Chester a. Call, Paradise, Calif.; sisters, Mrs Ella C. Cook, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Mrs Caroline C. Burton and Mrs Lorna B. Schlote,, Ogden, Utah. Several half-brothers and sisters also survive her.
