Thomas J. Call, pioneer builder, dies in Logan at age of 91
Thomas John Call 91, pioneer, builder, and longtime resident of Afton until a few years ago but recently spending much of his time at Logan, Utah died June 11, 1976 at Logan, of pneumonia following a stroke,Funeral services were held June 15 at 1 p.m. in the Afton Second-Third Ward LDS Chapel with Counselor William A. Call of the Third Ward conducting. Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 20, 1884, at Bountiful, Utah, to Anson Vasco and Rosa Emily Stayner Call. Until the age of four he lived in Bountiful with his mother and two great aunts. Then in October, 1888, he was brought to Afton by his father in a covered wagon, along with his mother and younger brother Charles.
He was reared in Afton in one of three families of his father's wives who were growing up simultaneously in the community. As a boy he roamed his east mountains of the valley. He attended school until age 18.
He made fast runs with his father to Montpelier with two teams and one light wagon, and would return with a second light wagon for their machinery store, carrying only small freight loads each way.
Beginning at age 18, Thomas played many years for dances and also in a brass band. He loved music.
Carpentry was his trade and he was skilled in it. In a lifetime of building, he built or worked on a size-able portion of the star Valley homes, schools and businesses, constructing his last home at ate 86.
Until the time of his death he lived in Star Valley; except from 1962 on, much of the time he also lived in Logan, building homes and doing temple work.
He was married to Ethel Grace Papworth Sept 19, 1906 in the Logan Temple.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, he was active in many positions. His church service included: ward clerk, Afton and Afton North Wards, 1904-1938; secretary, assistant superintendent, superintendent of Afton Ward Sunday school; secretary of YMMIA; president of 102rd Quorum of Seventy; high councilor, Star Valley Stake, 1933-1944.
Mr Call served two years on the Afton Town Council.
His wife preceded him in death, Oct 29, 1971, after 65 years of married life together.
He is survived by sons and daughters; Reuel Call, Spencer Call, Mrs Doyle (Maxine) Veigel, all of Afton; Eileen Call, Lander, Wyo.; Evan Call, Afton, Wyo.and Logan, Utah; Mrs Floyd (Vivian) Bagley, Driggs, Idaho; Mrs Ronald (Thelma) Enfield, Broomfield, Colo,; and Robert Call, Rexburg, Idaho. Two sons, Gerald and Osborne, preceded him in death.
Also surviving are 49 grandchildren, 137 great-grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; Mrs James (Vienna) Woolf Jr. Preston, Idaho; Horance Call, Canoga Park, Calif,; Mrs Hazen (Rosa) Spackman, Logan, Utah; and Cyril Call, Phoenix, Ariz. A number of half-brothers and half-sisters also survive.
