Christian J. Call, 68, native of Afton, president of the Sav-On Drug Co. in Los Angeles and former president of the O.P. Skaggs system in Salt Lake City until 1945, died of a heart ailment Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Salt Lake LDS Hospital.
Well known in Star Valley, Mr Call owned the Star Valley Power and Light Company serving Afton and immediate vicinity until a few years ago, when the company was purchased by Lower Valley Power and Light Inc.
After selling his O.P. Skaggs interests, he moved to Los Angeles and developed the Sav-On Drug Chain, which is the largest drug chain on the west coast. Quite a few former valley residents are store managers, or are employed in the Sav-On stores.
Mr Call also was instrumental in constructing the Kearns Shopping Center near Salt Lake City.
Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr Call served as bishop of the Afton South Ward from 1921 to 1926. He was sustained just after completion of the new chapel which was built in 1920 under his supervision. He served in many church positions and at the time of his death he was a high priest in the Garden Heights Ward, Salt Lake City. He also had bee a member of the finance committee during the construction of the Garden Heights LDS Ward Chapel.
Quite a number of Star valley relatives attended the funeral services held Tuesday in the Garden Heights Ward. All of his living family and brothers and sister were present. Interment was in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of the Larkin Mortuary.
Mr Call was born Nov 21 in Afton, a son of Anson Vasco and Lucy King Call. He married Alice Walton, Oct 4, 1911 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were later divorced. He married Eileen Helen Hanson June 9, 1945 in Los Angeles.
Survivors include his widow, three sons and five daughters, Tracy J. Call, Timothy A. Call, Christine H. Call and Patricia E. Call of Salt Lake City; Dr. Everard C.. Call, Mrs Don M (Arlene) Alder, and Mrs C. Lyle (Lorna) Call of Los Angeles, and Mrs A.D. White, Inglewood Calif., and grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters; Dr. George Call, Torringon, Wyo.; Mrs Stella Kennington, Afton, and Edgar A. Call and Mrs Mary Low, Los Angeles and 12 half-brothers and 8 half-sisters.
