Edgar Allen Call, 69, former Afton resident, died May 8, 1973 at Palm Harbor Hospital, Garden Grove, Calif. after a long illness.
Funeral services were held in the Third Ward LDS Church on May 11, with Bp. Gary Olson conducting. Burial was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress.
Edgar, known to his friends as Ted, was born Feb 1, 1904 in Afton Wyo. the youngest of nine children of Anson Vasco and Lucy King Call. His mother died shortly after his birth and he was cared for by older brothers and sisters until his father's marriage to Margaret Hepworth. She cared for Ted and loved him as she did his younger half-brothers and sisters.
While attending school in Afton, where he graduated form high school, he worked with his older brother, Chris J., in the Call Hardware Store, but found time to enjoy the outdoor activities of hunting, fishing and horseback riding.
In 1925 he and Ellen Nield were married in the Logan Temple and established their home in Afton which, until 1955, they claimed as their home town even though Ted's work led them to other locations temporarily. They were the parents of three children, R.L., Peggy Jean and Joel.
Early in life he showed an aptitude for business and organization and he worked hard for civic improvement in his home town. Ted was instrumental in the organization of the first volunteer fire department and served as Chief for several years. He also served on the Afton Town Council and was an Elder in the LDS Church.
For many years he owned and operated a hardware store, then became a building contractor for many public projects throughout the two valleys, such as the Swift Creek Dam and many fine private homes as well as the Silver stream Motel in the narrows. He also developed a fine strain of silver foxes.
At the outbreak of World War II the family moved to Ogden, Utah where Ted was a superintend of construction at the Naval Supply Depot. After the war the family returned to Afton where he built The Villa court apartments. He also owned and operated excavating equipment.
In 1955 Ted and Ellen moved to California to be closer to their children and Ted worked as a floor manager for Sav-On Drugs for many years. After retirement he and Ellen were able to indulge in a great deal of travel, something they both enjoyed. With their travel trailer, they were a part of a caravan spending two months in Mexico. At other times they toured the western states and Canada and spent many winters in Mesa Ariz.and Lake Havisu where they kept their boat. Close relatives attending the funeral from out of town were; Dr and Mrs George Call, Torrington, Wyo.; Mr and Mrs Laron Nield, Richland, Wash.; Mr and Mrs Marius Call, Salt Lake City; Mr and Mrs Raoul Call, Redmond, Wash.; Rosso Call, Riverdale, Utah; Ivan Call, Mr and Mrs Legrand Taylor, Mr and Mrs Lynn Nield, Afton, Wyo.; Mr and Mrs Seth Dunn, Georgetown, Idaho; Mr and Mrs Ira Leavitt, Orange, Calif.; and Mr and Mrs Dean Nield, Tustin Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; sons R.L. and Joel and a daughter, Peggy Haderlie as well as a foster daughter, Wanda Duce, Granada Hills Calif.
He is also survived by six grandsons, four granddaughters; one full brother, Dr George A. Call Torrington, Wyo.; and a sister, Mrs Stella Kennington Afton.
