During his boyhood he lived at Red Cloud, Nebraska and came to McCook in 1908 to be a fireman for the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1938 he went to Carlsbad where he worked as an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad until shortly before his death.
He was united in marriage to Mary "Mayme" Frances Davis Nov 18, 1910 in Alma, Nebraska. To this union seven children were born. One son Eugene, preceded him in death.
Surviving him are his wife, Mayme, three sons and three daughters, seven grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at the Breland Funeral Chapel in McCook March 12. Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. C. H. Prouty was in charge of the services.
Ernest is the grandson of Miley & Elmira Strayer and the great grandson of Martin & Rachel (Ralya) Strayer.
