James Wallace Grubaugh was born on 28 Nov 1834 Hayesville, Ohio to Jonathan H. Grubaugh and Henrietta Wallace. He was the 8th of their ten children. He married Rebecca Chandler on 25 Apr 1861 in Richland County, Ohio and they had five children: Robert Franklin (1864-1900), Emma Charlotte (1866-1937), James Arthur (1869-1933), Rebecca (1875-1949), and William Roy (1880-1954).

James was trained as a cooper and is listed was working (and living) with his brother, Richard Hooker Grubaugh, in 1860 census. In 1870 census, he gives his occupation as a telegraph line repairer. His real estate is valued at $2000 in the 1870 census. In the 1880 and 1900 census listings, James is again listed as a cooper.

James Wallace Grubaugh passed away on 14 March, 1905 in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio due to general debility and is buried there. He was at the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 16 days. He is buried in Mansfield City Cemetery.

In addition to working as a cooper, James Wallace Grubaugh for twelve years was a B & O lineman between Newark and Sandusky. He was a member of and joined the Volunteer Fire company in 1856. He was also a member of the Mansfield Lodge #19, I.O.O.F.

James and Rebecca are mentioned in a Chicago Tribune article about a horrendous train wreck near Hicksville, Ohio. - Chicago Tribune, Oct. 16, 1891
Hickville, Ohio - J. W. Grubaugh and wife were hurt internally during a B&O train wreck which killed a number of people.
