REBECCA "BECKIE" GRUBAUGH was the daughter of James Wallace and Rebecca C. Chandler Grubaugh.

Rebecca was a well respected life-long teacher in Mansfield. The Western Elementary School in Mansfield was named for her. Rebecca never married.

Here are several newspaper articles lauding her work:

Mansfield News Journal, May 18, 1948
Western School renamed for Miss Rebecca Grubaugh
Veteran Instructor Active since 1893
The Western Avenue School was officially renamed the Rebecca Grubaugh school last night by the board of education.
The school was named for Miss Grubaugh who has been teaching the first grade in Mansfield since 1893 and is at present instructing the third generation of pupils at the former Western Avenue School.
The renaming was approved at the suggestion of Supt. of Schools, W. L. Miller, and on a motion by board member, Dr. W. R. Riester.
Miss Grubaugh joined the Mansfield school system in 1893 and started to teach at Bushnell school. Between that year and 1912, she taught first grade at Bushnell, West Fifth street, and Newman Schools.
In 1912, when the Western Avenue School was opened, Miss Grubaugh was assigned to the first grade. She has taught in the same classroom for the past 36 years.
Miller told the school board that he felt the honor should be granted to the teacher who has been in the service of the city for the longest period of time in "due consideration of her long and faithful service."
He added that he approached Miss Grubaugh, who lives at 392 W. Fourth St., concerning the renaming of the school and that she "accepted the honor with timidity."
"She did not feel that she deserved any recognition." he said.

Mansfield (OH) City School’s Notable Teachers
Rebecca Grubaugh- August 16, 1949
Rebecca Grubaugh was a legendary teacher who taught grade school in the Mansfield City Schools. She taught for 46 years. Her career ended when she became seriously ill from a heart condition. Grubaugh described in her letter of resignation the joys she had throughout her teaching years. She was a competent teacher and the Mansfield City Schools were fond enough of her that they named the Western Avenue School after her.
Grubaugh began her teaching in Mansfield at Bushnell in 1895. She then went to West Fifth in 1900. In 1907, she went to Newman and taught there for five years. Then Grubaugh transferred to Western School, which was later named Rebecca Grubaugh School. She taught first grade throughout her remaining years at Grubaugh Elementary.

Shortly after retiring from teaching, Rebecca died at the age of 73.
