Mrs. J. Saugstad Dies Suddenly

Mrs. John Saugstad, prominent resident of Crookston for the past 30 years, died unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon at a local hospital. She was 73 years old, and although she had been in failing health for 17 years, was still active until the time of her death.

Mrs. Saugstad was born in Freeborn county, Minn., March 21, 1871. The former Mina Sophie Bangen, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Bangen, pioneer residents of Polk county. In 1874 she moved with her family to Polk county, and came to Crookston in 1912.

On October 23, 1895, she was married to John Saugstad at the Neby church, Vineland township. While making her home in Crookston, she was active in SCTU work, the Trinity Lutheran church and Ladies Aid, the Daughters of Norway, the American Legion Auxiliary and the hospital auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, her mother, Mrs. Hans Bangen of Climax, now 95 years old; six children, Major Randolf C. Saugstad of Fontana, Calif.; Ernest H. Saugstad of Pomona, Calif.; Julian M. Saugstad of Van Nuys, Calif.; WAVE Belva Saugstad, (specialists technician second class), of Clinton, Okla.; C. Olaf Saugstad of Crookston; and Mrs. Ruth Mortrude of Whittier, Calif.; eleven grandchildren, John G., Randolph C., Lois Jane, Indus Jo, Carla Sue, Donna May, Jeane Belva and Gary Behrns Saugstad and Jana Ruth, Susan Arva and Mary Beth Mortrude.

In addition she is survived by three brothers, Anton Bangen of Van Hook, N.D., Theo Bangen of Sanish, N.D., and Helmer Bangen of Climax; and four sisters, Mrs. Marie Hauske of Halstad, Mrs. H. O. Estenson of Sanish, Mrs. J. M. Stubson of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. O. M. Stromsmo, Etzikom, Alberta, Can.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed, pending the expected arrival tomorrow of her daughter, Belva. They are under the direction of Stenshoel funeral home.
