I was born September 7, 1896, the first of six children born to Johannes and Mina Saugstad. Born on my parents’ farm in the township of Roome, Polk County, Minnesota, five miles northwest of Eldred and eight miles north of Climax. I lived my childhood years there until Dad rented out the farm to become manager of the Eldred Cooperative Mercantile Store and the family moved to Eldred.

We lived in Eldred for several years. When Dad became an insurance adjuster and was away from home a great part of the time, Mother and the three boys at that time took part of the second floor of Grandpa and Grandma Bangen’s farm home. Some of the happiest times during my “kid” days were spent on that farm. I just loved that place with the forest—a nice place for a kid to play, summer and winter.

We lived there for several years until Mother received notice from the renter of our farm that he was leaving and someone better come and take care of the livestock. She bundled us kids up and back to the farm we went. Dad came home in time to take over for spring work. We stayed there until I was about 16 years old when we moved to Crookston as Dad was a member of the state legislature at the time.

I attended the country schools while living on the farms and finished school in Crookston and at the Northwest School of Agriculture, a University of Minnesota branch. A year after graduation, I enlisted in World War I. I served with the Army in various components, like the Reserve and National Guard, until called back into service in February 1941. I finished my Army life after World War II when I retired with the grade of Major.

On March 18, 1922, I married Myrtle Arva Gordon from Shevlin, Minnesota. We have two sons and a daughter: John, Randolf, Jr., and Lois Jane.

After Worled War II, the family decided to make their permanent home in California so we came out, bought a home, and are still living in the same place in Fontana. We’ve been here 35 years, but have seen a lot of the country in those years. Written by Randolf in 1979
