Ernest was the second child born to his parents, John and Mina Saugstad. He attended the country school near their farm until the family moved to Crookston in 1912 where he attended the Ag School. He worked at the Bridgeman Russell Creameries until he became employed at the Miller Tanning Company where he worked until the business was destroyed by fire.

He then went to California to join his brother, Julian, but in place of becoming a movie industry employee, he went into an entirely different type of work as a foreman for West's Pest Control, fumigating citrus and date groves in the area from Pomona to the Saltron Sea and other groves in the northern section of Los Angeles County. He retired in 1970.

Ernie remained a bachelor until at age 65 he married Loueva (Basinger) Sweet, a widow with three children. As his step-children married, they also provided him with several grandchildren who all loved him dearly. After a long illness, he died in Pomona, California, a place that had been his home since the early 1930s.
