C. Olaf Saugstad , 91, Crookston, died Monday, March 4, 2002, in Riverview Nursing Home, Crookston.

Christian Olaf Saugstad was born July 18, 1910, the son of Johannes and Mina (Bangen) Saugstad , Climax, Minn. He moved with his family to Crookston, where he graduated from high school. He attended one year of technical trade school in Washington, D.C. He married Ruth Behrns on June 11, 1938, in Crookston. He worked in California as a ship's carpenter in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard during World War II, until he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army. The war ended before he was sent to the front lines. He returned to Crookston, where he worked for the Eickhof Construction Co. In 1960, he and Adelard Fontaine started their own painting business. He retired when he was 80. Ruth Saugstad died Oct. 8, 1992.

He is survived by children, Jeanne (Richard) Kedrowski, Stillwater, Minn., Gary (Susan Larson), Puyallup, Wash., and Lynn (Paul) Strodtbeck, Walker, Mich.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Randolph, Earnst and Julian; and sisters, Belva Saugstad and Ruth Mortrud.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
