John Saugstad, 81, veteran public servant of Crookston and the Polk county area, died unexpectedly at a Crookston hospital yesterday evening.

He had been admitted to the hospital yesterday morning. Among other activities, he had been Crookston tax assessor and poor commissioner, an Eldred postmaster, a Climax farmer, a representative to the state legislature and a state senator, a Crookston city alderman, Polk county register of deeds, manager of the Winter Shows in Crookston, and secretary of the Crookston Association of Public Affairs, now the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Saugstad retired from public life Jan. 1. He was born at Westby, Wis., May 14, 1871, and moved with his parents to Douglas county in Minnesota a year later, when his father, the late Rev. Christian Saugstad, accepted his first call as a Lutheran minister. John’s mother died when he was six.

Father was Minister
The Rev. Saugstad brought he second wife and children to a farm 10 miles norh of Climax in 1880 when he accepted a ministerial call to a parsonage in a log house near the present Sand Hill Lutheran church. Mr. Saugstad was in his early teens when his father came to Crookston to serve a congregation in Crookston and was confirmed in the small chapel which was the forerunner of the later Trinity Lutheran church building on Ash street in Crookston, and the present Trinity church. He also served as assistant organist.

He married the former Mina Sophia Bangen in Climax in 1895. Mrs. Saugstad died in 1944.

Mr. Saugstad was postmaster at Eldred from 1901 to 1905, was associated with a general store there at the same time. He farmed at Climax for 14 years, adding to his income by teaching and writing insurance for the Vineland Farmer’s Insurance Co., organized by his father and which he served for many years as a director.

State Representative
He was elected a representative to the state legislature in 1907 and 1909, and was elected state senator in 1911 and 1913. He was seventh war alderman in Crookston for many years.

He was Polk county register of deeds for two terms, and manager of the Winter Shows for nine yars. He had been city assessor for 14 years at the time of his retirement. Mr. Saugstad was one of the pioneers in the puoltry association in Crookston, and was the first winner of the E.W. Schuster memorial award, granted each year to some person judged making the greatest contribution to city beautification in 1934. He was at that time secretary of the Crookston Association of Public Affairs an organization devoted to the progress of the city.

He was scretary-treasurer of the building fund for the Trinity Lutheran church in Crookston when the organization completed its new church building two years ago.

Survivors include four sons, Randolph, Fontana, Calif.; Earnest, Pomona, Calif., Julian, Studio City, Calif., and Olaf, Crookston; two daughters, Belva, Crookston, and Mrs. Arvid (Ruth) Mortrude, Whittier, Calif; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Lonne, Billings, Mont.; Mrs. Ragna Langlie, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Camilla Nygaard, Bella Colla, B.C., Canada; one brother, Randolph, London, Ontario; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funerl services have tentatively been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran church in Crookston, with the Rev.J. David Larson officiating. The body will lie in state at the Stenshoel Funeral home in Crookston Monday afternoon and evening.
