Mac "Julian" Saugstad was the third child of John and Mina (Bangen) Saugstad. He attended the rural Climax schools where he lived until the family moved to Crookston in 1912 where his public school education was completed. In his later teen years, he left Crookston and was employed in various types of work where he got a taste of working on a ranch, in lumbering, and in various "big city" employment in the larger cities of Washington. He even worked on a fishing boat where he lost everything he had when the boat capsized out in the ocean. He returned to Crookston for a short time, then took off for California where he became employed in the movie industry in the 1920s. He continued in this business until he retired in 1965. He was married to Mary Leach in 1931 and had three girls: Indus, Carla and Donna.

Most of his years were with Warner Brothers Studio, and as a cameraman he was on location in many parts of the world. Two of the most interesting out of the country locations were the Fiji Islands where they filmed His Majesty O'Keefe" and Italy where they filmed Helen of Troy. Since the filming in Italy took several months, Mary and the girls joined him and lived in Rome. After the picture was completed, they packed themselves into a Volkswagen bus and did some European sightseeing before returning to California.
