Mrs. Houske Laid to Rest

Mrs. Peter (Marie) Houske, long and dearly loved resident of Halstad, was laid to rest Saturday afternoon in the Halstad Cemetery. Services were held at two in Halstad Lutheran Church which was filled with relatives and friends, many coming from a distance.

Pastor C. A. Oleson based his sermon on Rev. 2:10, the last part of the verse, "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." John Sulerud, accompanied by the organist, Mrs. John Hellerud, sand "Abide with Me" and "Den Store Hvide Flok."

The honorary pallbearers were Henry and Oscar Reltan, George and Leland Henderson, Jacob Kulstad, Oscar Viker, Sr., Clark Sulerud, Gilmar Dokken, Stener Stenerson and Theodore Olson. The active pallbearers were Clifford Brekke, George Reitan, Manley and Juel Furuseth, Leslie Ford and Marvin Geiselhart. Funeral arrangements were by Houske Funeral Home of Crookston.
Born July 27, 1875 at Neby, near Climax, Mrs. Houske, the former Marie Bangen, was the daughter of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Bangen who came to the Climax community by covered wagon in 1873. Her father died in 1923 and Mrs. Houske cared for her mother during her last years. Mrs. Bangen celebrated her 99th birthday Sept. 23, 1947, and died before reaching her 100th anniversary.

Mrs. Houske came to Halstad as a young woman and worked for the Rasmus Olsons where she met Mr. Houske. They were married July 7, 1898, and made Halstad their home. Before retiring, Mr. Houske was manager of an elevator here. He died in 1939. Mrs. Houske died Nov. 10 at St. John's Hospital, Fargo, N.D., where she had been taken that morning following a stroke suffered the previous day in her home. She was a devoted person, active in the Halstad Lutheran Church and ladies aid and the Halstad Mission Society, a member of long standing. She held various offices in the aid and mission society and at the time of her death was treasurer of the latter. In spite of her 84 years, she was busy doing good until the very end. A large number of memorial gifts and beautiful floral tributes expressed the high regard in which she was held and sympathy for her bereaved family.

She is survived by her daughter, Prudence, who teaches at Detroit Lakes and made her home with her mother; a son, Herbert, St. Paul, a granddaughter and a great-grandson. [A son] Irvin, died at the age of six. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. J. C. Saugstad of Crookston and a sister who died in infancy.

Other survivors include three brothers, Anton and Theodore Bangen, both Minot, N.D., and Helmer of Climax, and three sisters, Mrs. Clara Estenson, New Town, N.D., Mrs. John Stubson, Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. Olaf Stomsmoe, Etzikom, Alta., Canada.

All brothers and sisters were at the funeral. Among the other relatives who came were Mrs. B. Gilstad and Mrs. A. Jevning, Great Falls, Mont., Howard Bangen and Mrs. M. Aubol, New Town, N.D., Jerome Stromsmoe, Etzokom, Mrs. J. J. Zitek, Watford City, N.D., as well as many others from Crookston and Cilmax.
