George Washington Eckler was born to Henry and Margaret Keiser Eckler April 10, 1830, in Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co. PA. He married Catherine C.A. McCallister about 1852. Her family was from Rush Twp. Dauphin Co., PA. George was a coal miner and also a craftsman of fine Pennsylvania long rifles - now museum pieces, learning the skill from his father.

George and Catherine were the parents of James W, Sarah Jane, Emma May, Daniel (Amanda Mease) & Amanda "Mandy" Catherine (Joseph Frank Longreen) Eckler.

George died at the young age of 44 as was the curse of many coal miners.

Wife Catherine was born August 30, 1834, and died December 3, 1882, at the age of 48. The parents and younger children are buried at St. Peter's Cemetery in Orwin, Schuylkill Co. PA. Daughter/Sister Amanda Catherine Eckler Longreen had a lovely monument erected in their honor. Amanda Catherine widowed at a young age, traveled to South Bend, St. Joseph Co. IN where several of her father's sisters were living. She died at the St. Joseph Co. Home and was interred at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, St. Joseph Co., IN. She was 60 yrs of age.
