Mary Ann (Maria Anna) was born to Henry and Margaret Keiser Eckler in Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co., PA. She was first married to Daniel Umbenhauer (1844) - they had two children. Daniel and the babies would die of illness at about the same time.

She later married widower - Benneville Frederick on July 25, 1856, in Pine Grove, PA. They, along with Benjamin's young son William and daughters Elizabeth & Mary Ellen, all located to SouthBend, IN.

Their son George W was born March 27, 1858. Benjamin entered the Civil War - Dec 1861 at Camp Ellis in Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN. He died in-camp from Typhoid Fever on 08 August 1862 - when their son was 4yrs old - leaving Mary Ann to raise the four children. Benjamin is buried in Corinth National Cemetery, Corinth, MS.

In her late years Mary Ann was eligible to be admitted to the Old Soldier's Home in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co. IN when she was no longer able to care for herself. Was admitted 15 Sep 1908. She was accompanied by her sister- Eliza Eckler Miller and niece Ellen Miller Wagner. Mary Ann passed away there the 17th August 1909 at 85yr 8mo 2dy. Her body was returned to South Bend for burial in City Cemetery of South Bend-attempted to find her stone - but was advised by the sexton that he was unable to locate any. He placed a flag on the recorded plot. Other members of the Frederick family are also interred there.
