He attended St. Joseph's Military Academy and Hays High School. He was the co-owner of Oldham Sales and Northwest Distributors prior to his retirement in 1985. He belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays Commercial Travelers and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all at Hays. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On April 7, 1947, he married Mildred Dreiling at Hays. She survives.
Other survivors include: four sons, Michael L., St. Louis, Robert J. Jr., Thomas L. and Richard A., all of Hays; four brothers, Elmer, Plainville, Marion, Hays, Frank, Manhattan, and Cecil, Duncan, Okla.; five sisters, Marcella McCollum, Fort Wayne, Ind., Frances Wooldridge and Clara Walters, both of Hays, Helen Knowles and Margaret Hazelton, both of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John; and a sister, Celestine Obholz.
Parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays, with Father Earl Befort presiding. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Michael Suchnicki presiding. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday, and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, all at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays, with military graveside honors performed by the Hays VFW.
Memorials may be sent to TMP-Marion Alumni Association or to the Holy Family Elementary School, both in care of the funeral chapel.
