Annie Laurie King Tolar was born June 9, probably in 1877, but maybe earlier, in Robeson County, North Carolina. (The family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.) Annie Laurie was the daughter of William Edward "Eddie" King and Margurett ("Maggie") Jane Edwards King and had at least seven siblings. Family lore is that after the death of their mother, Annie Laurie raised her sister, Nettie Donnie King Neely Riley, who was about fifteen years her junior. Annie Laurie married James Murchison “Merk” Tolar, and they made their home in Dillon County, South Carolina. They had ten children: an infant who died shortly after birth, James Robert Tolar, Giles Murchison Tolar, William "Willie" Tolar, Bessie Tolar, Annie Tolar Herring, Jack Tolar, Blanche Tolar Stainback, and twins Lonnie Tolar and Vonnie Tolar. Annie Laurie died on March 2, 1941 in Dillon County and is buried near her son Jack and daughter Annie in Riverside Cemetery in Dillon County. She was not buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery where her husband and some of her children are buried because she feared that cemetery.
Thanks to Vonnie McDonald, Wanda Case, and other King family researchers for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. I hope someone will add a photo of Annie Laurie. If a closer relative than I would like to manage this burial site, please let me know.
