Mattie Edna King Bailey was born February 6, 1874, or maybe later, to William Edward "Eddie" King and Margret "Maggie" J. Edwards King in Robeson County, North Carolina. (The family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.) Edna was raised in Robeson County, North Carolina and Dillon County, South Carolina and had at least seven siblings. Around 1896 she married Walter Clemmon Bailey, and they had seven children: Walter Kit Bailey, Bertie Bailey Grant, Mattie Bailey Guiton, Romie Rendo Bailey, Lewis Bailey, Lewis Evans Bailey, and Clifford Ernest Bailey. Edna and her family were living in Rockfish, Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1930. In 1935 they lived in Saint Paul's, Robeson County, and by 1940 they lived in Lumberton, Robeson County. She died at age 70 on August 14, 1944 in East Lumberton, Robeson County and is buried by her husband, whom she predeceased, in Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton.
