Note: His birth date on his tombstone is inaccurate. He was born in 1883 although he claimed he was born in 1894, dropping his age by 11 years. (The King family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.)

Lawrence Adams King was born March 18, 1883, or maybe later, to William Edward "Eddie" King and Margurett "Maggie" Jane Edwards King in Robeson County, North Carolina. (His death certificate lists his birth date as March 5, 1894. His military draft registration lists his birth date as March 18, 1883. The family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.) He was raised in Robeson County, North Carolina and Dillon County, South Carolina and had at least seven siblings. He married Addie Collins King, and they had two daughters, Estella "Isla" (or "Stella") King Gilliam and Odessa "Odessie" King Wood, and one son, Curtis Elmo King.

Around 1910, at age 27, Lawrence worked at the cotton mill in Dillon, South Carolina, living with his wife, daughter Isla, and sister Nettie Donnie King Neely Riley. His brother Lonzo "Lonnie" King worked at the same cotton mill. At age 34 Lawrence was drafted into World War I out of Davidson County, North Carolina.

Lawrence and his family later lived near Weldon and Roanoke Rapids in Halifax County, North Carolina. He died at age 69 on September 22, 1952 due to heart and kidney disease and diabetes in Halifax County and is buried in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. His ancestry was probably English and Scots-Irish.

Thanks so much to his sister Nettie King Neely Riley and other King family researchers for much of this information. Thanks also to Chuck and Lynne Ivey who located the place of Lawrence's burial and Pam Boan who located his death certificate. Any errors here, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. If a closer relative than I would like to manage this burial site, please let me know. I hope someone will add Lawrence’s photo to this site.
