He married Naomi Martin Tolar, and they had eight children, Eloise Tolar Moody, Floyd Wilson Tolar, Edith Pansy Tolar Foster Mungo Carter, Shirley Rose Tolar Shanklin, Jack Martin Tolar, Sr., Bobbie Jean Tolar, Gerald Keith Tolar and James Robert Tolar.
Jack was injured after accidentally discharging a shotgun while unloading it. He died 5 hours later from his wound, at the age 45 on June 18, 1952. At the time of his death, he was an Ice Salesman at the Ice plant. He had also been a truck driver and a machinist at the Ice Cream Plant. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Dillon County.
