William was the fourth of five boys in the industrious Quaker farming family of Benjamin Hampton III and Hannah Morris Hampton.

He was probably named after William Wharton, who had married his mother's sister Elizabeth.

The Hampton family moved to Quakertown (Franklin Twp.), Hunterdon Co. when William was a young teenager. Like his father, William became a farmer.

He married Susannah Baldwin in 1847. They had ten children: Susannah about 1848, Hannah Maria in 1849, Lucy E. about 1851, Stewart C. in 1854, Joseph Elwood in 1856, Mary E. about 1858, Charles B. in 1862, Anna Rebecca in 1863, William Judson in 1866 and Allice L. 'Lulu' in 1868.

By 1870 William had moved to neighboring Kingwood Twp., and he stayed there for the rest of his life. He left the Quaker faith and became a Methodist.

He had 14 grandchildren and 158 additional descendants as of late 2007.
