Joseph was the fifth of ten children of William Wharton Hampton, a farmer, and Susannah Baldwin Hampton.
He grew up in Franklin Twp., Hunterdon Co., but moved to nearby Baptistown, in Kingwood Twp., as a young man. He lived there for the rest of his life. He was a poultry farmer.
He wed Mary Catharine Hoff on July 20, 1881 in Baptistown. Their son, Abijah Elwood, was born fifteen months later.
