John was the middle of five boys in the industrious Quaker farming family of Benjamin Hampton III and Hannah Morris Hampton.

The dates used above are from the Gregorian calendar. Quaker religious records from the period -- which retained the Julian calendar and began the year in March -- recorded John's birth on the 2nd day of the 4th month, 1823 and his death on the 20th of the 1st month, 1898.

He moved from Wrightstown, Bucks Co. to Quakertown (Franklin Twp.), Hunterdon Co. around 1840, when he joined the Kingwood Monthly Meeting in Quakertown.

Like his father, John became a farmer. He lived in Franklin Twp. for a time, then moved to Delaware Twp., Hunterdon Co.

He married a woman named Lucy Bray. They had no children.
