Stewart was the fourth of ten children of William Wharton Hampton, a farmer, and Susannah Baldwin Hampton.

He grew up in Franklin Twp., Hunterdon Co., but moved to nearby Frenchtown as a young man. He was a grocer.

He was said to have fathered a daughter with Amy Maria Snyder in 1875, but was acquitted of the charges in a court of law.

He wed Phebe R. Shay in 1879. Their daughter, Nina Stewart, was born in 1880.

He has been described as a highly respected member of the Methodist church.

His early death was no doubt a tragedy for his family.
