Obituary
Ada Lhea Holfeltz Hicken, of Roosevelt, passed away peacefully in her home on May 9, 2020, at 12:42 p.m. She had spent 91 years on this earth and it was her time to again greet loved ones in her heavenly home.
She was born in Vernal, Utah on September 21, 1928 to James T. and Effie Bernice Warby Potter Holfeltz.
Lhea was raised in Vernal on her family farm. She learned the value of hard work and good time management. She was a good student and loved learning. She attended the old Glines and Maeser schools, Uintah Junior High and graduated from Uintah High School. Her accounting, typing and shorthand skills served her well throughout her life.
Lhea worked for General Electric in Salt Lake City before serving her honorable mission in Northern California. After returning in 1951, she worked Friday nights at the temple typing cards for patrons. She met Don Hicken, a returned missionary from the southern California mission at a single's ward activity. Don and Lhea married in the Salt Lake Temple six months later on June 6, 1955. They are the loving parents of four sons and two daughters. Don died November 22, 2015.
During their marriage, they lived in Utah, Colorado, New Jersey, and Washington, moving with Don's job advancements in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Lhea finished her Bachelors degree in Psychology at Fort Lewis College while living in Colorado and raising her children. Don and Lhea were examples of study, industry, honesty, love, patience, temperance, service, kindness and faith.
Don and Lhea served a church mission in the seminary and institute program in the Northern Plaines Dakotas Mission from 1991 – 1993. They served 16 years in the Provo and Vernal Temples, gaining many dear friends during their service.
Memories were made in their travels to the Middle East, South America, Europe, and Hawaii. They gained a great love for neighbors, friends, and relatives some of whom have already departed from this life.
Lhea's sour cream potatoes, Acini fruit salad, and crescent rolls were family favorites. She loved watching her garden grow along with treasured grandkids and great-grandkids. Her rhubarb and bleeding hearts still thrive.
Lhea loved quietly serving others and sharing the gospel. Even as she aged, she would be found delivering meals for the “elderly” as she would put it. She kept in touch with friends and remembered everyone's name and birthday.
She endured falls, two hip fractures in 2019 and subsequent surgeries and found herself needing assistance and round the clock care the last year of her life. Thank you to all family members and friends for your love and service to her.
Lhea is survived by her younger brother: Clark Duane (Joanne) Holfeltz, five children: Carolyn (Dave) Gremillion, Kerry (Kim) Hicken, Mark (Melinda) Hicken, Rodney (Gayla) Hicken, Roger (Cherie) Hicken; son-in-law Michael (Kelli) Weldon, nineteen grandchildren, and twenty-five great grandchildren with five more due in the next couple of months.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Donald E Hicken, daughter Renee Hicken-Weldon, her parents, four siblings, and eleven half siblings.
Graveside service and viewing will be held on Friday, May 15, 2020, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Heber City Cemetery (550 East 600 North)
