Anna Gertrude Farrell was born on January 11, 1881 in Orlando, Gilmer County, WV. Her parents were Peter Farrell and Anna Cuff, although their spelling is somewhat inconsistent among sources throughout the years which I attribute to the difficulty in pronouncing and spelling their names. It appears she may have had 8 siblings; Margaret A (m. Craft), Mary C (m. Fitzpatrick), Elizabeth Beatrice (m. Rush), Thomas Vincent, John, Patrick Francis, Ella Madalene (m. Bohan) and Peter Jr. It appears her highest level of education was the 8th grade.

According to early census records, she lived with her parents and siblings in Glenville District in Gilmer County, WV. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on June 5, 1900, they living on the family farm in Glenville District, Gilmer County, WV. At the age of 33, Anna and 29-year-old Edward Joseph McCudden were married by Father Thomas A Quirk on 17 Aug 1914 at St. Michael's Church in Orlando in Gilmer County, West Virginia. The newlyweds honeymooned at the famous Webster Springs Hotel in Webster County. and departed for their wedding trip by train from the Orlando Depot. It appears Anna and Edward may have had 5 children, Mary Catherine, Frances Eleanor, Joseph Andrew, Emma Lee and James Lee. However, only one census record exists for Emma and may be a transcription error and instead should be James.

After her marriage in 1914, it appears they stayed in the Gilmer County area.
