BIOGRAPHY UPDATED on 14 May 23

Margaret "Maggie" A. Farrell was born on 12 Jun 1866 near the Canoe Run Stream in Lewis County, West Virginia. However, some inconsistencies exist across a few known records with regards to her birthdate and birth location. West Virginia birth records indicate a birthdate of 12 June 1866, yet her gravestone indicates 26 June 1866. Based on vital records, I am assessing 12 June is the correct birth date until other evidence is obtained to prove otherwise. With regards to her birth location, her birth and marriage records list Lewis County, however several of her children's birth and death sources list Gilmer County. Given the adjacent nature of the two counties, I cannot state with 100% certainty her exact birth location. However, based on vital records, I am assessing Lewis County as the correct information until other records can be obtained to prove otherwise. Her parents were Peter Farrell and Anna Cuff, although their spelling is somewhat inconsistent among sources throughout the years which I attribute to the difficulty in pronouncing and spelling their names. It appears she may have had 8 siblings; Mary C (m. Fitzpatrick), Elizabeth Beatrice (m. Rush), Thomas Vincent, John, Patrick Francis, Anna Gertrude (m. McCudden), Ella Madalene (m. Bohan) and Peter Jr. Her middle name may be "Ann" after her mother.

According to early census records, she lived with her parents and siblings in Glenville District in Gilmer County, West Virginia. According to the 1870 United States Federal Census taken on 20 Jun 1870, they were living near Sandfork in Glenville Township, Gilmer County, West Virginia. At the time, Margaret was 3 years old and lived with her parents Peter Ferrel *Farrell (35) and Ann (25) and her sister Mary (1). According to the 1880 United States Federal Census taken on 23-24 Jun 1880, they were still living in Glenville District, Gilmer County, West Virginia. At the time, Margaret was 12 years old and lived with her parents Peter Farrell (43) and Ann (33) and her 5 siblings; Mary (10), Elizabeth (8), Thomas (6), John (4) and Patrick (2). In addition, her maternal grandfather Thomas Cuff (60) also lived with them.

At the age of 24, Margaret and 28-year-old Samuel Charles Craft, son of Jacob Craft and Catherine Garman, were married by Father Thomas A. Quirk on 19 May 1891 in Gilmer County, West Virginia. It appears Margaret and Samuel would eventually have six children; Patrick Joseph, Leo Vincent, Thomas Andrew, Peter Farrell & Mary Estelle (m. Conley). They also had an unknown daughter who was born in 1891, but passed away prior to 1900.

After her marriage to Samuel in 1891, it appears they stayed in the area and took up residence in the Glenville District of Gilmer County. According to the 1900 United States Federal Census taken on 5 Jun 1900, they lived with Maggie's father on their family farm in Glenville District, Gilmer County, West Virginia. At the time, Maggie A Craft was 33 years old and along with her spouse Samuel Craft (37), their 3 children; Joseph P (6), Leo V (4), and Thomas C (2) lived with Maggie's now widowed father, Peter Farrell (65) and her 5 siblings; Johney (25), Patrick (23), Gertrude (19), Ella (17), and Peter Jr (14). It appears she stayed in the Gilmer area until her untimely death in 1907.

Margaret passed away at the early age of 41 sometime around 12 Sep 1907, presumably in Gilmer County, West Virginia. Sources and evidence are limited leaving the exact date unknown. Currently, the only source regarding her death date is her gravestone which lists 12 Sep 1907. In addition, her father's will enacted in 1909 lists his daughter Margaret as deceased and her husband Samuel Craft as a beneficiary. According to cemetery records, she was laid to rest in Saint Bridget's Church Cemetery in Weston, Lewis County, West Virginia.
