Allen Barksdale Biggers, 90, of Greenwood passed away Friday, November 5, 2010, at Indywood Glen Personal Care in Greenwood.

Mr. Biggers was born May 10, 1920, in Kilmichael, Mississippi, to Steve Lory Biggers and Bessie Carter Biggers. He graduated from Kilmichael High School and attended Mississippi State University. He was in the Air Force during World War II returning home to Greenwood to run Leflore Dairy with his brother, Marcus. Leflore Dairy was the first dairy in Leflore County. After Leflore Dairy was sold to Midwest Dairy, he began a long association with Standard Oil Company. Mr. Biggers was the last independent Standard Oil agent in this area. He continued his association with Standard Oil making the transition to Chevron and then retired when the Chevron business was sold to Scott Petroleum.

Mr. Biggers was a charter member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he served as a lay speaker and a dedicated Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. He taught the Nelson Taylor Class and when it merged with the George Wallace Sunday School Class continued as a teacher. He was an active member of ACTS at St. John's. Mr. Biggers was an active Gideon until his illness. He was a member of the Salvation Army Board and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was awarded the Elk of the Century Award for his dedication to the ringing of the bell campaign for the Salvation Army. Many families in Leflore County received the benefits of his dedication to this ministry. Mr. Biggers was presented the Book of Golden Deeds Award by the Greenwood Exchange Club in 2000. In his spare time, he loved to fish Grenada lake with his brothers and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, Hortense Lott Biggers; his brothers, Steven Thomas Biggers, Marcus Daniel Biggers, William Michael Biggers; his sisters, Leola Holmes, Clyde Swindoll, and Mildred Pittman.

He is survived by his wife, Sam Buchanan Biggers of Greenwood; his twin sisters, Rachel Biggers Chandler of Madison and Rebecca Biggers Thompson of Winona and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Allen Barksdale Biggers will be Monday, November 8, 2010, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Jack Smith and Reverend Billy Ray Stonestreet will preside at the service, burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Lott, Marc Allen Biggers, Steve Biggers, Bailey Chandler, Bill Chandler, Sam Pittman, Michael Biggers, and John Pittman. Honorary pallbearers will be Terrell Cobb, Members of the Wallace Sunday School Class, ACTS, the Gideons, Dr. Henry Flautt, Jr., George McCully, Barbara Branaman, Sharon Harvey and the staff of Indywood Glen Personal Care.
