DEATH OF AN OLD PIONEER PASSED AWAY LAST SUNDAY

Geo. W. Briskey Passed Away at the Ripe Age of Seventy - Came Here in 1888

There are few men left in th upper Wenatchee Valley whose coming antedates the landing of Geo. W. Briskey in this region in the summer of 1888. He came over the mountains from Ellensburg by way of what is known as Blewett pass, then a mere Indian trail, and took up a homestead in the valley across the Wenatchee river from Leavenworth and has made his home there ever since. He had a controversy with the Northern Pacific Railroad over the title to the land he settled on. After several years spent in litigating the matter the courts finally awarded the title to the homestead to Geo. W. Briskey. He was in industrious, frugal man and by hard work succeeded in reclaiming his land from the wild state. He built a cabin which housed him and his family of a wife and five children until four years ago, when he built a substantial modern dwelling. George Briskey was made of the stuff of which all pioneers are made. He had something of the adventurer in him. He liked the wild, frontier life. He was honest and industrious. Wanted what he thought honestly belonged to him but respected the rights of his fellow man. He had some trouble in early years with a neighbor, but really never did anything that was considered seriously wrong. Enjoyed the confidence and respect of a large number of friends, all of whom will drop a tear of regret at his taking off. He took a severe cold, and never of a robust constitution, he was sick only a few days.

Geo. W. Briskey was born in Alabama and was married there to Miss Mollie Beard, Dec 16, 1880, leaving there a few years afterwards for the great northwest. Mrs. Briskey died in Dec. 1911, and was buried in the Leavenworth cemetery, where the remains of Mr. Briskey will be laid to rest. He is survived by two brothers, Nicholas Briskey, who resides at Cashmere, and another brother at Milltown, Alabama, and by two sons, Lin and William, and three daughters, Mrs. E. E. Andrews, Mrs. Mary Cahail, who all make Leavenworth their home, and Mrs. Frank T. Fromm who lives with her husband in Idaho and is now here in response to advice of her father's death.
