Jasper N. Briskey Died in Lamar, Colo.
The news was received in LaFayette this week of the death of Jasper N. (Tobe) Briskey, which occurred in Lamar, Colorado, on Saturday, July 7. The deceased was 88 years of age at the time of his death and was a former citizen of this county, having lived for many years near Milltown.
In 1861 he enlisted in the 14th Alabama Regiment and served throughout the period of the war and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 8th, and interment was in the Independence, Missouri Cemetery where his wife was buried 30 years ago.
The deceased is survived by many relatives in Chambers County.∼Pvt., Co. D, 14th Alabama Infantry
In November 1997 five Confederate tombstones were placed here to commemorate the five Briskey brothers that fought with the 14th Alabama Infantry. However, NONE of them are buried here. Jasper is buried in Independence, MO (FAG Memorial #40117296) and Marion is buried in Birmingham, AL (FAG Memorial 60049626). They were the only ones to have survived the war. Miles (FAG#48415548) was killed in the Peninsula Campaign, Holloway (FAG#48415657) died in Winchester, VA of wounds and is probably buried there (FAG#119381323), and Jesse (FAG#48415498) died of wounds in Staunton, VA.and is probably buried there (FAG#154748705). Their actual burial places are unknown.
