Mrs. Roxie Weatherly, 83, mother of American Civil Rights Pioneer, James Meredith, died Sunday, July 27, 1986, at Hinds General Hospital in Jackson, MS.

Mrs. Weatherly was the widow of Moses "Cap" Meredith and Coleman Weatherly.

She was a member of Christian Liberty Baptist Church and Church Circle No. 1. She was also a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

A wide traveler, Mrs. Weatherly was serving as president of a fund-raising project, Camp Site Drive, to secure financial support for the construction of a camp for youth in the Kosciusko area.

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Delma Softley, and Mrs. Thelma Franklin, both of Detroit, MI; Mrs. Miriam Griffin of St. Petersburg, FL; and Mrs. Hazel Coleman of Jackson, MS; sons, Arthur Claudell Meredith of Jackson, MS; Leroy Meredith of Kansas City, MO; James Meredith of Jackson, MS; Emmitt Meredith of Detroit, MI; and Everett Meredith of Fort Walton Beach, FL; brothers, Solomon Patterson of Los Angeles, CA; and Benjamin Patterson of San Diego, CA; sisters, Mrs. Mary Wilson, and Mrs. Caroline Nash, both of Milwaukee, WI; and Mrs. Hattie Whittington of Kosciusko, MS; and 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The mother of James Meredith; who lovingly referred to her as his "oak", her inscription reads: She was a kind and affectionate wife... a fond mother... and a friend to all.

Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday
at Christian Liberty Baptist Church in Kosciusko, MS.
