Funeral services for Mrs. Paul E Smalley were held Thursday, May 15th at 1:30 pm at the Schroeder Funeral Home and at 2:00 pm at the Marion Street Methodist Church with the Rev William T Hoyle in charge. Mrs. George Erickson sang 'In The Garden' and 'The Old Rugged Cross,' accompanied on the piano by Mrs. W.E. Pharoah.
Pallbearers were James, John Jr, Ronald, Donald, Joe Jr, and Richard Smith, all nephews of Mrs. Smalley. Mr. and Mrs. William S Wheelock were in charge of the flowers. Burial was at the Squire Boone Cemetery.
Mary Louise Smalley, daughter of J. Elmer and Mary Smith, was born February 25, 1916 in Boone County, and died May 13, 1958 at the Boone County Hospital at the age of 42 years, 2 months and 18 days, following a lingering illness.
She was united in marriage to Paul Smalley on June 7, 1933 and to this union was born one son, Lawrence Robert and two daughters, Mary Pauline and Margaret Ruth.
Mrs. Smalley had spent her entire life in Boone County where she was loved and cherished by all those with whom she came in contact. She was a member of the Marion Street Methodist Church and was active in church and school activities until the time of her illness.
In the spring of 1952 she was graduated from the Boone High School, along with her son, Lawrence, after attending night school.
On January 28, 1958 she underwent surgery and again on February 4, and had been confined to the hospital most of the time until her death.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1948 and her father in January of this year, also a brother, George, who died in infancy.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Smalley, one son, Lawrence Robert, and two daughters, Mary Pauline (Mrs James Reynolds) Bermuda and Margaret Ruth at home. Also seven brothers: Clarence and Edward of California, Virgil of Des Moines, Elmer of Belmond, and John, Tom and Joe of Boone; and five sisters, Mrs. John (Olive) Vaughn, and Mrs. Catherine Miller of Des Moines, Mrs. Lena Stout and Mrs. Ruth Cass of Davenport, and Mrs. Chas. (Eva) Smith Boone, along with a host of relatives and friends.
She was a kind and loving wife, mother, sister, neighbor and friend and was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. May 28, 1958
