Funeral services for Joseph I. Smith, of Ipswich, were held Tuesday, April 28, 1992 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich. Rev. Marvin McPhee officiated. Burial was in the Ipswich City Cemetery. The Hein Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Joseph "Joe" Smith was born on February 3, 1907 to J. Elmer and Catherine Mae (Brehany) Smith at Casey, Iowa. He attended schools in Boone County, Iowa.
On June 24, 1930, he married Nancy Steen at Ipswich. They lived in Boone, Iowa, where he was employed by the City of Boone for 35 years.
In the 1960's, they moved to Ipswich. Mrs. Smith passed away in 1971. He continued to live in Ipswich. Several years ago he became a resident at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Ipswich. He passed away there on April 25, 1992.
He served for a time with the Iowa State Guard and was a volunteer fireman for the city of Boone.
He is survived by one daughter, Betty Mae Johnson of Dennison, Iowa; four sons, John W. "Bill" Smith of Webster City, Iowa, Joe Smith, Jr. of Ogden, Iowa, Richard L. Smith of Kearney, Neb., and Charles L. Smith of Cambridge, Mass; 29 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Smith, Belmond, Iowa; and one sister, Catherine Miller of Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 11 brothers and sisters.
Casketbearers were his four sons and Joe Geditz and Emil Segebart. The ushers were Gary Haar and Louie Thares. The Organist was Minnie Hammrich.
