Son of Michael Wolf (known as Jeff Mitchell 1847-1927) who from an immigrant family that hailed from Wurges, Bad Camberg, Germany. His mother was Rebecca Catherine Hill Wolf (1847-1925), daughter of early settlers to Bastrop County, Texas. William as born in Bastrop County and grew up in a family of 8 children (four others died as children) who farmed and ranched at the Walnut Creek Community (today Rockne) Bastrop County.

William graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical School, Galveston. He was a prominent surgeon. William married Amy Ann Herff (1885-1918) in 1904. They had one son Capt. William Mitchell Jr (1907-1989) also a MD.

After his wife Amy died in 1918, William married Maria Edith Williams (1900-1974). They were parents to a son Thomas (1922-2005) and a daughter Edith Mary (1925-2006).

William Mitchell Wolf died suddenly of a heart attack while visiting the historic R.L. White Ranch, near Helotes, Texas, 20 miles NW of San Antonio where he resided.
