Son of Johannes "John' Wolf Sr (1811-1868) and Catherine Bermbach (1809-1869). Michael immigrated from Wurges, Bad Camberg, Germany in 1855 arriving in Bastrop County in January 1856. The family consisted of 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters ages 16 down to 3. Michael was 8 years old when they arrived.

Michael married Rebecca Catherine Hill at the Walnut Creek, Bastrop German settlement on 24 Aug 1869. They in turn were parents to 12 children of which only 8 lived to adulthood in the more harsh Texas frontier. Michael "Mitchell" farmed and ranched with his family and relatives, including older brother John Wolf Jr (1843-1926). In addition to ranches near Garfield, they had a ranch near Seguin, Texas.

Michael along with the Phillip Goetz family each donated 5 acres for the first Catholic Church, the Church of the Ascension, at Walnut Creek which was later replaced by Sacred Heart Church located south of Walnut Creek in Rockne. MItchell lived for a time in his father's original cabin, just NE of Rockne off of Red Rock Rd. The cabin still exists and was moved to the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) history park in Bastrop.

Michael "MItchell' passed away in San Antonio in 1927. He last an longest living of the German family that immigrated. He spent his last years living near his son William MItchell Wolf (1874-1944) a Medical Doctor and surgeon in San Antonio.

Inscription

Son of Johannes & Catherine. Beloved husband, father.

Given name Michael, he was later called Mitchell. Born in Wurges, Bad Camberg, Germany to Johannes "John Sr" Wolf *1811-1868) and Catherine Bermbach Wolf (1809-1869). Michael immigrated with his parents and 6 siblings in 1855, arriving in Bastrop to join other Wurges Catholic families by January 1856. The family settled on land just north of what is today Rockne, Texas along Old Red Rock Road in what was then the Walnut Creek community. His father was a smith and farmer.

Shorty after the deaths of his father and mother, Michael married Rebecca Catherine Hill (1847-1925) on 24 August 1869 in Rockne. Rebecca, born in Missouri came to Texas as a child with her family who were also early Bastrop settlers. The newly married couple lived in Michael's parent's cabin along a small branch of Walnut Creek, next to the small Wolf Cemetery where his parents and younger sister Clowina (1855-1865) were buried. The cabin still exists today, but moved to Bastrop as part of the (Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) park.

As mentioned in the Rockne History Book, Michael Wolf and Phillip Goertz each donated 5 acres to build the first Rockne Catholic Church of the Ascension in 1876.

Michael and Rebecca suffered tragedy early on, as of their first 5 children, 4 died in childhood. They did have 8 children live to adulthood, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Michael along with his brothers, particularly older brother John Wolf Jr. farmed and ranched in Bastrop, Travis and Sequin Counties. Michael and Rebecca moved to San Antonio the last dozen years of their lives, to live close to several children, including son Michael Jr MD who was a surgeon in San Antonio. Michael and Rebecca passed away in 1927 and 1925 respectively and were buried in Walnut Creek Cemetery where they farmed in their early years.

Michael was the last living son or daughter of Johannes and Catherine Wolf and family who traveled from Wurges, Germany and had arrived in Bastrop 72 years prior.

Gravesite Details

I'm recommending the name "Jeff" be moved to a simple middle name. The only record using Jeff is the 1920 census. His German name was Michael & he was called MItchell as is inscribed on this gravestone. Rockne History books have him as Michael.
