Caspar Gottlieb Heinrich Klett (typically Gottlieb H. Klett in the U.S.) was the son of Johann Christian Klett and Maria Elisabetha Hartung. He was a gunstock-maker in Suhl, and relocated to Oberndorf am Neckar, Württemberg, by 1878, to work in the Mauser gun factory. He married Pauline Schlenker in Oberndorf on 28 Sep. 1879.

In March 1882, Gottlieb and his family immigrated to the U.S. aboard the S.S. Vaderland. They immediately settled in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ, where his brother-in-law Christian Schlenker also located. Gottlieb was apparently working as a baker at the time of the family's departure from Antwerp. He worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Elizabeth at first, and subsequently became a house carpenter.
