In March 1882, Gottlieb and his family immigrated to the U.S. aboard the S.S. Vaderland. They immediately settled in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ, where his brother-in-law Christian Schlenker also located. Gottlieb was apparently working as a baker at the time of the family's departure from Antwerp. He worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Elizabeth at first, and subsequently became a house carpenter.
