Arthur J. Depies, 87, a former Village of Hilbert president, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon May 26 at his home, 721 W. Main Street, in Hilbert.
He was born March 2, 1896, in the town of Charlestown, a son of the late Henry and Margaret Plesch Depies.
Mr. Depies served in the U.S. Army during World War I. On June 27, 1922, he married Freda Wieseckel at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert. Mr. Depies was a fuel oil and gas distributor for 45 years, retiring in 1961. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert, the Mens Club of the church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Knights of Columbus.
His military affiliations include the Kupsh-Brockmann American Legion Post 127 in Hilbert, Veterans WWI Barracks 2204 of Chilton and the Luxembourg Society of Wisconsin.
He was a former member of the Advancement Association and belonged to the Hilbert Senior Citizens group.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Joyce, Appleton; two sons and daughters-in-law; Rainer and Margaret, Green Bay; Gerald and Joyce, Appleton; five grandchildren; a great grandson (Joel); three brothers; Walter and Edgar Depies, New Holstein; and Henry of Chilton.
Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
The funeral Mass was at St. Mary Catholic Church, in Hilbert, with the Rev. Anthony Birdsall, pastor, celebrant. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
