Carl Calvin Stanbery was a son of Van Buren Stanbery & Mintie (Bond) Stanbery. He was the 15th of 17 children. When Carl was an infant their family moved to Archer County and the next year or so moved back to Van Zandt County where their family had previously lived.

Carl married Nora Belle Jennings on 26 July 1926 in Van Zandt County. Carl and Nora Belle had nine children together, including one stillborn son.
