Effie Lee Oma "Lela" Stanbery was the eighth of 17 children born to Van Buren & Minty (Bond) Stanbery. Lela's paternal grandparents were Nathaniel & Samantha (Oglesby) Stanbery and his maternal grandparents were James Abner & Mathilda "Jane" (Herndon) Bond.

Lela first married Judson ("Jud") James Helms on May 24, 1914 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Jud and Lela had three children together: Elvie, Inez & Irene. Jud died in 1931 and in 1933 she married George Washington ("Washie") Gore with whom she had a daughter named Glenna. Washie died in 1967, and on May 9, 1970 Lela married her first husband's brother, George "Alvin" Helms. Alvin had been married to Mittie Pearl Helms who had died in 1965. Alvin died seven years later, leaving Lela widowed a third time.

Lela and her family were members of the Church of Christ. Lela lived to a ripe old age, dying just under one month before her 101st birthday.
