Archie Whitton Stanbery was the 16th of 17 children born to Van Buren & Mintie (Bond) Stanbery. He was named Archie because when he was born his family was briefly living in Archer County, Texas. According to his older sister Lela, Archie was delivered by Dr. Whitton from whom Archie got his middle name. Archie began his early years with the Stanbery spelling, but as an adult he spelled his name with two r's.

At the age of 23, on 9 Aug. 1933, Archie married Elsie Lee Simpson in Van Zandt County, Texas. Together they had seven children before his untimely death at the age of 45.
