The Stanbery family began in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas and soon moved to Van Zandt County where Tom spent most of his years.
On Saturday, 13 May 1911, Tom married Beula Benton Curtis, daughter of Samuel B. & Betty Jane (Fitzgerald) Curtis, just north of Canton, Texas. They had four children together: 1. Lillie Bell Stanbery who married E. Clifford Heddins, 2. Lillian Marion Stanbery who married Levi Bowman, 3. Millard Herman Stanbery who married Joy Helen Teague, and 4. Margaret "Janice" Stanbery who married Homer Henry, Lee Onxley and Bob Griffin.
Besides being a hard-working farmer, for several years Tom worked for Morton Salt Company in Grand Saline, Texas, and later in his life he and Beula moved to the Houston area where he held several jobs. Tom was a hard-working man, sometimes working two and three jobs at the same time.
After the children were grown, Tom and Beula divorced. Tom had a drinking problem which he never dealt with. As a young man, Tom didn't get along well with his father (Van), and he held on to that bitterness his whole life. Tom died of a sudden heart attack--while in a state of inebriation--at the age of 75 at the home of his brother & sister-in-law, Archie & Elsie Stanbery.
